Once the Patient decides to go on in for joint replacement surgery, he is first sent to the anaesthetic consultant for assessment of fitness. Blood Tests, ECG and chest X-ray are taken and the patient is admitted a day before surgery and fasts for five hours befor being taken to the operating table. The surgery starts with anaesthesia.
The surgeon makes a cut through the skin through the joint capsule to expose the area connected and the worn bone is removed.The newly prepared bone is crosschecked with trail prothesis.Bone cement is used for the process as it sets in 10 minutes. A tube drains off excess blood and the wound is closed. A day in the ICU may be neccessary for observation.The physiotherphist gets to work the next day; it’s his job to make the patient stand,exercise and start walking.
